The Secret of Kells is demonstrated to have achieved an equilibrium between artistic inventiveness and the use and interpretation of heritage. Consequently, the (mis)use of heritage objects in the context of artistic appropriation and remediation is addressed. The manner of employing relevant scientific and historical data in the film is analysed in order to evaluate its consequences in terms of appropriating, using, interpreting, and over interpreting heritage objects. The Secret of Kells is chosen as a suitable example for discussing the notion of creative interpretation of heritage, understood as a form of inventive, still measured treatment of heritage values and meanings in the process of their presentation.
The film tells a fictional story about the destiny of The Book of Kells, the early 9th century richly decorated Gospel book, nowadays kept at the Library of Trinity College in Dublin. SUMMARY: The paper discusses the role of the Irish animated feature film The Secret of Kells (Moore 2009) in mediation of heritage values.
